Leona Naess: Comatised

Aaron Schallié

the minute I peeled back the plastic shrink-wrap on this CD I was impressed. Not since Pearl Jam's Vitalogy have I seen an album interesting enough to stare at. It's not exactly the extensive collection of bizarre articles that Pearl Jam's 3rd CD was, but I found it very intriguing trying to decipher the cryptic little code used to describe each track graphically. cd cover It's hard to explain, but someone definitely had some fun with the old "Wingdings" font. This is a great example of how important it is to spend that extra time and money on the look of a CD. I found the more I listened to Comatised, the more I stared at that CD jacket, and before long you notice it's getting harder to focus because your too busy tapping your feet and diggin' the tunes. A 24-year-old English singer and model for Calvin Klein, Leona Naess has definitely struck a catchy yet melancholic chord or two with her debut album Comatised. With tracks like "Charm Attack", "Anything", and "New York Baby", Naess achieves a hummable familiarity after only one listen, and before long you'll find yourself at work or in the car singing along to these tracks. Overall, Comatised has a feel that musically resembles Smashing Pumpkins' Gish. There are also definitely a lot of singer/songwriter influences heard throughout this album, but why bother listing them when it's safe to say Leona Naess has her own thing… and it's pretty damn good!
